Gift Overview
So what exactly are the gifts? In general, they are powers (or curses, depending on how the person feels about it) given to a human by a creature from another world. These creatures are known as Dwellers or Otherworlders, and the worlds are as follows:
- Overrealms: This is the land of the angels and angelic beings. Creatures from this realm generally have good intentions when Gifting humans. Gifts are likely given to those that already had potential to make the world a better, more angelic place. That isn't to say that everyone who receives these gifts enjoys them or uses them well, but they were given with good intentions.
- Human Earth: Obviously, this is the land where Ungifted humans and most Gifted humans permanently reside.
- Ghoulin: This is the in-between land of the spirits. Gifts from this realm are given for a variety of purposes, from selfishness (some spirits try to possess humans in an effort to "live" again) to love (ancestors that remained in this realm may attempt to give gifts to someone down their family line, for whatever reason). Again, Gifted humans can have mixed feelings about these Gifts and often do not know what spirit touched them, or why.
- Underworld: This is the realm where demons originate. Of course, the demons are supposed to be trapped there, but clearly that isn't always the case (though possession is the closest they've come to escaping, and that still often feels like entrapment). Gifts from this realm are the ones most often referred to as "curses" by the recipients. Demons often have insidious intentions when Gifting and are known to cause mental instability in their recipients.
Now, just because these beings are those that touched the human to give them the Gift, doesn't mean that the Gifted human can see the creatures. The Dwellers and Otherworlders can only be seen by those whose Gifter included such a power in the Gift. Furthermore, it's not uncommon for Gifted humans to be unsure which realm their Gift is from. It's not always obvious, such as in cases of pyrokinesis or or telepathy.
Finally, Gifts are generally not passed down through family lines, though it may seem that way. The Gifts are rarely genetic, and when they are passed on by genes, the power gets weaker and weaker as generations go on. This means that if a character's mother had the power of hydrokinesis and was able to pull moisture from the air, the character who inherited it will likely only be able to manipulate water in liquid form, and their future children may only be able to create ripples in a pond. Although powers are very rarely passed on through genetics and family lines, it isn't uncommon for the same type of otherworldly being to continue gifting members of that family. After all, if an angel Gifted a human, who used the Gift for good and passed on good morals and motivation to their children, why wouldn't the Angel attempt to continue bettering the world within a family line that has a good reputation? And likewise, if a demon realizes that a particular family is susceptible to influence and possesses weak morals, it will likely continue to try to manipulate said family. The gifts aren't always the same down family lines, as creatures will adapt their methods over time, which is the factor that makes it most obvious that the Gifts weren't passed on by genetics.
All powers require training to gain control over. They vary in intensity, and are usually affected by strong emotions. Using the Gifts for extended periods of time usually causes exhaustion and a physical ache in the body, but the more a Gifted trains, the more tolerance they will build up to combat these effects.
Gift List
Note: You may choose Gifts from this list, but these are not necessarily the only Gifts available. You may use this to get ideas, throw a different spin on them, or even suggest a whole new Gift to us. While we are open to new ideas, keep in mind that staff reserves the right to require changes to your desired power or deny it all together if it does not work. All Gifts, no matter what realm they were given from, have the potential to be used for good or for evil purposes.
GeneralThese Gifts can be Gifted by a creature from any realm, for a variety of reasons.
- Pyrokinesis: Ability to control fire. May range from only being able to manipulate already-existing fires to being able to generate fires a reasonable distance away from one's body.
- Hydrokinesis: Ability to control water. May range from being able to manipulate already-existing bodies of water to being able to generate water or pull it from the air. More likely to be gifted from the angelic realm than any other, but not always.
- Cryokinesis: Ability to control ice. This can mean melting ice/freezing water (though they will not be able to manipulate it in liquid form), sending ice shards flying, creating a case of ice around something, etc.
- Terrakinesis: Ability to control earth/rock. This could mean anything from moving pebbles to causing a small-scale earthquake. More likely to be gifted from the demon realm than any other, but not always.
- Aerokinesis: Ability to control air/wind. This could be on a personal level (like only being able to push/pull air within close reach) or as wide scale as being able to push clouds above to move faster and prevent a storm. More likely to be gifted from the spirit realm than any other, but not always.
- Telepathy: Ability to read minds. Gifted humans first developing this often feel overwhelmed with the constant stream of thoughts from others, but can be trained to control it so that they can block it out and only hear thoughts when they want to.
- Telekinesis: Ability to physically move general objects. Most often have to be in a clear line of site, but with practice can be done if the Gifted knows exactly where the object currently resides and it is within reasonable distance.
- Sight: Ability to see the type of creature that gave them the Gift. Vary rarely extends to being able to see creatures from the other two realms.
- Travel: This can vary from dreamwalking (traveling to other places whilst asleep, while able to obtain very real damage from events in the 'dreams' and sometimes waking up in a different location than where they went to sleep) to portal creation (ability to consciously create portals to another place, time, or realm). This is one of the more dangerous powers to have, because unless the Gifted are extremely trained, they often don't know where the portals are leading to or can't control where they wake up when they have walking dreams. It is rare, but sometimes they even end up physically emerging in the realm of the creature that Gifted them.
