Phoebe was born in Mykonos, Greece, to Monica Kaligaris and Joshua Anders. Her parents hadn’t been married when she was born, having been the product of a seductive night on the beaches of the Greek island. Once Joshua had found out that Monica was pregnant, he had moved to Greece to help her with the baby, showing her traditional Greek family that he was worthy for their daughter.
Phoebe was born early into the world, a squalling mess of a baby girl with large silvery blue eyes and dark hair that covered her head. She was welcomed with open arms, a gift to Monica and Joshua, who were planning their wedding. She was given a Greek first name, as befitting her mother’s heritage, and her father’s American last name, but her middle name, Alaula, was inspired by the honeymoon location that the couple chose in Hawaii.
Phoebe was an adventurous toddler, exploring new places and venturing without fear to new people as her parents showed her the island. She grew to love the ocean and the sunset on the water even at a young age, and she showed intellectual promise when she began to say her first words early in life. She recognized colors and sounds faster than any child, and she could speak complete sentences by the time she was three. At this time, Phoebe’s little sister, Daphne, was born, and Phoebe took to her little sister like the sun to a flower.
Daphne became Phoebe’s everything.
As the two grew, they showed signs of great intelligence, and the proud parents took their children to be tested in Athens. With Phoebe at eight years old and Daphne at five, Phoebe showed an IQ of 161 and Daphne showed an IQ of 135. Both high marks for young children, and Monica and Joshua felt blessed to have such smart children. They were placed in a special school accommodated to their needs as they grew up, trying to be as normal as they could be. As they grew older, they were placed in separate schools, and they became more involved in their traditional Greek family’s traditions.
When Phoebe was fourteen and Daphne was eleven, seismic activity had rocked the island for some time, but now it was growing exponentially. Phoebe, almost a young adult, had taken to hunting and tracking in her spare time, to exercise her mind and calculate different tactical procedures in her head. She was out tracking when she felt the first quake under the island, close to home. She shrugged it off and kept going, but soon the island started to vibrate, and she grew worried, so she headed back home to find her parents in a fright and her sister curled into a little ball.
As Phoebe tried to console her sister, the shaking stopped and Daphne calmed, complaining of a headache. When she went to get headache medicine, the shaking began, and Phoebe ran back to her little sister. The shaking stopped, and while it was an odd occurrence, the Anders family thought nothing of it. It was only a couple days later, while Phoebe was in school, that a teacher pulled her out and told her that a small earthquake had collapsed a part of Daphne’s school that had been weakened by the bigger earthquakes earlier that week and several children had been rushed to the hospital.
Among the seven children was Daphne.
Phoebe flew to the hospital and spent several days in the hospital by her sister’s side, who was locked in an indefinite coma. Even her parents couldn’t take her home without her fighting them off; one time, it got so bad that a nurse had to sedate her. When Phoebe woke up, there was an older woman sitting by her side. The woman introduced herself as a trainer from a place called St. Gertrude’s, a school for gifted children. Phoebe had always known that she was gifted, intellectually, and that her sister was gifted too, but this was confusing.
The woman explained that Daphne had a special power, one that was linked to the earth. Daphne’s panic attacks had been linked to the earthquakes on Mykonos, and so it was that whenever her younger sister had an episode, her pain and panic were channeled into the earth and released as seismic activity. The woman asked if Phoebe had any powers like that, and when she shook her head, the woman touched her hand. Immediately she felt a small probe in her mind, like a finger caressing the inside of her skull, and Phoebe slammed walls on that mind touch. The woman was awed and a bit amazed and told her that she had the power to block and suppress other people’s powers, as well as having a strong mental block against telepathy.
With arrangements made, the Anders family moved to New Tatum, with Daphne secured in the hospital there and Phoebe going to school at St. Gertrude’s. It’s been three years since Phoebe moved to New Tatum, and Daphne still hasn’t woken up. Feeling guilty that she couldn’t save her sister now that she knew what her power was, and having no closure as to when her sister will wake up, Phoebe still continues to do her best for her sister and her family.
